Sister gallery is pleased to present new paintings by Mary Weatherford. The selected works are part of a series, variations of the same image: a large rock on the Malibu coast. The paintings are based on drawings made on site. Weatherford, however, is an unreliable narrator. As the artist interprets her working drawings, each painting changes. A pyramid appears on the horizon; boulders are rearranged; the beach disappears. Some pictorial elements are repeated, others are dropped. While the pictures feign the seriality of Monet’s haystacks or Warhol’s shadow paintings, they depart from reliability into subjectivity. This is Weatherford’s first solo show in Los Angeles.
